LAND USE GOALS <br /> I <br /> The Town of Westport Land Use Plan Goals are simply broad based policy statements to guide future <br /> decision making in the Town. The goals provide a framework for the specific policies and <br /> recommendations found in the Land Use Plan. <br /> I The goals are a reflection of the opinions and general consensus of the community,as collected by the <br /> Town of Westport during the land use planning process. Some of the goals have been carried over from <br /> the previous Westport Land Use Plan due to their continued relevance and merit. The goals are not <br /> presented in any order of importance or priority. <br /> I • Preserve the Town's rural character,particularly in areas outside of the urban service area. <br /> • Protect and preserve prime agricultural land. <br /> 1 • Protect and preserve natural resources in the Town including wetlands,flood lain drainage <br /> I ways, wildlife habitats, and other similar environmentally significant areas. g <br /> I • Encourage most new development in the Town to occur within the urban service area. <br /> 1 • Discourage the proliferation of new subdivisions and other non-compatible developments with <br /> predominantly agricultural areas. <br /> • Prohibit development within any designated environmental corridors or conservancy areas <br /> with the possible exception of trails or other related recreational uses. <br /> • Protect and preserve unique historical and archaeological areas within the Town. <br /> • Provide for the orderly and controlled development of non-agricultural related commercial and <br /> industrial uses only within defined locations in the urban service area. <br /> • Promote an orderly development pattern that will be economical and efficient to provide with <br /> public services. <br /> • Protect water quality through the use of acceptable erosion control and soil conservation <br /> techniques. <br /> • Maintain and improve the attractiveness of the landscape in the Town through site design <br /> guidelines,architectural recommendations,and the reclamation of sand and gravel extraction <br /> sites. <br /> • Maintain a safe and efficient transportation system in the Town through collective planning <br /> with local, county,and state officials. <br /> • Promote improved communication with surrounding governmental jurisdictions regarding land <br /> use issues which may impact the Town. <br /> 30 <br />
