• More than 50 percent of caregivers surveyed stated that patients prefer non-institutional
settings for care at the end of life. •
Based on the research cited above, we project these benefits from the planned facility:
Patients who are not able to remain at home will be able to receive hospice services within a
home-like environment by familiar staff; care will continue to be patient-directed and focus on
pain and symptom management.
Families are an integral part of HospiceCare; both the patient and family are the unit of care. Our
services include emotional and spiritual support for family members and friends. These people,
so important to the patient, will also benefit from a HospiceCare Center and Inpatient Facility.
The facility will be designed and furnished in a comfortable home-like manner that will include
space for family members staying with patients. During the patient's illness, when inpatient care
may be required, the homelike environment will help support the needs of family members. After
the patient's death, family members may choose to attend HospiceCare Grief and Support
Groups at the HospiceCare Center.
Children's needs are different from those of adults, whether as patients facing death or as they
grieve after the death of someone important to them. Specific accommodations will be made for
child patients in the inpatient facility. A play room will also be available for children visiting a
patient in the facility. The HospiceCare Center will also provide ample space to accommodate
the growing demand in our community for children's and teen grief groups.
The entire community will benefit. The hospice facility will enhance public awareness of the
option of hospice care. It will increase public and professional knowledge and understanding. It
will serve as the primary resource center for quality end-of-life care. HospiceCare currently
partners with the University of Wisconsin's Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Social Work,
Business and Pharmacology, as well as MATC's health care programs. The new facility will
provide a centralized location for the important and valuable multidisciplinary educational
experience for students, residents and fellows.
VII. Hospice Care: The Future
There is a wealth of evidence demonstrating strong national public support for and use of hospice
services. With increased attention paid to end-of-life issues as part of a national agenda, there is
more expression, written and oral, of great respect for hospice care services with special
emphasis on the fact that these services are not available from any other organization. Hospice
services, through effective pain and symptom management, result in compassionate, supportive,
and life-affirming. It is also cost-effective and efficient. Demographic information indicates that
the need for such services will increase, not lessen. Research in our home community supports
these conclusions.
