illness. When the hospital can no longer provide curative care, home is the best place for
the dying. When home isn't the answer, an alternative is very appealing.
6. There is surprise that Madison is one of the few cities of its size without such a facility.
7. All of the perceptions about Hospice are very positive.
8. The people who know about the early services of Hospice comprise a small minority.
Most agree that the time to call Hospice is when the end is near and the family can no
longer cope. All agree that getting help early with planning the best way to spend the
time remaining, and emotional preparation for the family and patient are services people
don't know about. But those are services that people need.
9. Numerous questions came up in the discussions. Participants want to know more about
how patient care is funded and how Hospice is funded in general. How long can Hospice
work with a patient? Who pays? Who would pay for the cost of care in an in-patient
facility?
10. Many suggested that fund raising events that require participation, such as an ice cream
social create a feeling of community ownership and spur additional contributions.
Recommendations
1. Based on the findings of this research, CRC strongly recommends pursuit of building this
facility. There is a strong need for this facility in the community.
2. HospiceCare's plan to get approval by the Community Foundation is confirmed as
critical to campaign success.
3. Your location selection can be anywhere as long as it is inviting, peaceful and offers the
amenities of transportation and parking. It should look like home not like an institution.
4. Launch your campaign with education about Hospice first and then for funding of the
facility, or do both simultaneously.
5. There are questions you need to answer. Most of those deal with the funding of Hospice
in general and this facility specifically. Allay fears that this facility will detract from the
services you already offer so well. Purport how this facility will enhance your current
services and complete the range of services that should be offered.
Chamberlain Research Consultants Page 2
