Awareness of Charitable Organizations
In this group the moderator asked participants about their familiarity with several service
organizations in the area. The purpose was to compare and contrast their awareness and
perceptions of each.
Attic Angels
Most have heard of the group, and have perceptions of volunteers, apartments, day care and
House & Garden Show. Another knew a past resident and had a favorable perception of it as a
place to live. Others viewed it as a difficult place to get into. The House & Garden Show was
well liked. One woman had investigated Attic Angels while placing her parent. One
knowledgeable participant said the Tower is hard to get into, but that is not true for the nursing
home. Someone asked if they planned expansion and if they provided full medical care.
V.A. Hospital
Knowledge of the VA was less pervasive. One person thought the local V.A. Hospital was very
good compared to others and had heard horror stories about other locations, especially about
physicians being overworked, but she praised the caring of local V.A. doctors. Others
corroborated her comments. Two had relatives that had received good care there. All of the
reactions were based on knowing someone who had received care there.
St. Benedict Center
This was viewed by several as a good place for retreats and is located in a very beautiful setting.
Serene, pretty, welcoming, and good meeting facilities were some terms used to describe St.
Benedict's. More than half knew that it is ecumenical today.
Awareness of Hospice Specifically
Hospice was described as "angels", compassionate, caring, unique, and wonderful. One
respondent reported her neighbor's strong perceptions of the quality of HospiceCare. Another
participant discussed the thorough training of the staff and their help in learning what to say
about death. Another talked about the excellent workshops for family members, friends and
children. She also liked involving friends in the last days of care. Another spoke of a 99 year
old neighbor who died this morning and was able to die at home. She wondered about the costs
for specialized care at home, and also if a place for dying would not be more cost-effective.
"They provide a necessary service that is not available from any other organization."
"It's a great organization. My husband is a volunteer and the training is incredible. It's
very positive and very much needed in our community."
"It enables you to die the way you want to or need to, and accommodating the needs of
your particular family."
"When you've lost someone, they provide so many valuable services."
Chamberlain Research Consultants Page 4
