stories are impressive and make the message more personal for those that may be unaware of
Hospice.
Reactions to In-patient Facility
The moderator outlined the various purposes of a Hospice facility. Half of the participants
readily agreed that a facility is needed. The facility should serve the dying for a limited time.
One participant's story illustrated that hospitals no longer keep the dying they can no longer
help, and such a facility would be better equipped to handle the dying than a nursing home.
While they didn't want it to be a hospital, they didn't understand that acute care components
would have to be present.
The appeal could be similar to that of the Ronald McDonald House. The facility should have a
peaceful home-like feeling. They envisioned space for the family, including a common room
with a television and an area for children's activities, a kitchenette for coffee, drinks and possibly
family meals. Colors unlike those in hospitals, artwork, flowers, plants and a connection to the
outside, as well as places to display family pictures, cards and remembrances should also be
considered. An ecumenical chapel would be appreciated. It was difficult for the group to focus
on the death of younger people, but they should be considered in the room and adjacent
component designs.
The surrounding area should contain a place for traveling relatives to stay, as well as release
activities, like restaurants and a pleasant place for walking. Transportation should be considered.
It should be accessible by public transportation or a shuttle should be made available. Parking
would be important.
The facility should be located for easy access, but not downtown. Sites suggested were St.
Benedict's, the Yahara Center and San Domiano. One person thought a location adjacent to a
hospital would be appropriate, but the group was not in agreement. A site close to a nursing
home or retirement campus got approval. The more they discussed this, the more attractive the
Oakwood proximity seemed. St. Benedict's had the right amenities, but felt somewhat isolated.
However, in light of future development it might be a perfect site. Some are looking for more of
a community feeling, but others saw it as the perfect location. Middleton is a good location
because expansion has already happened and is more accessible than a Fitchburg site.
Most felt the Hospice name would overcome the negative or unrelated connotations of any
location's current entity.
Campaign to Raise Funds
Although the participants felt the public needed more education on Hospice before embarking on
fund raising efforts, most felt the campaign was a good idea and worthy of their support.
This group had great concern and many questions about the funding and financial constraints of
Chamberlain Research Consultants Page 6
