HospiceCare for two brothers last year. Both had HospiceCare
Awareness of Hospice
The moderator asked the participants what they knew about Hospice. Responses included:
"Helps people die with dignity."
"They solicit contributions."
"A friend had Hospice at the end, but because of the doctor, help didn't come soon
enough. I have sent money when friends have died. I support what they do.
"I had experience with them when my wife's daughter, age 40, died with Hospice help.
Another friend wouldn't be interviewed by Hospice."
"There is a problem with the physicians getting patients involved. A nurse gave me a
video and that led to my involvement. It was very good."
"In the early `80's, the doctors didn't push Hospice at all. One said to us, "Don't start
what you aren't ready for."
"My brother, a physician, was referred."
"Physicians aren't always informed about Hospice or are reluctant."
One questioned if Hospice came in when you are given six months to live and another responded
that it was at the point of being diagnosed as terminal.
Another talked about her father. She made a blind call to Hospice because her father needed to
be in a facility. He was too ill for them to care for him in their home. She described the
experience as very positive, but wished that Madison had an in-care facility.
Several agreed that physicians need to bring HospiceCare up earlier and more consistently.
Another said that she had two friends who used Hospice and had very favorable experiences.
However, in both cases she felt that Hospice could have been there earlier. Her friends seemed
to wait until the end was very near and they missed out on help preparing the family and
themselves.
Almost everyone in this group had family members or knew someone who had taken advantage
of HospiceCare services.
There was considerable agreement among participants that Hospice plays a very important role in
our community. Many felt that Hospice is viewed as help for the dying, but less known for help
Chamberlain Research Consultants Page 9
