"The continuity of the people is important."
"If that was its purpose. That it was respite. That it wasn't also a hospital or nursing
home. Like the Ronald McDonald house more narrowly defined. That's more palatable."
"My experience as a deacon with people who are ill is that some of them will lie to avoid
going into a nursing home.
I think my mother would go into a"health care center"much more readily than if it was
called a "nursing home".
Campaign to Raise Funds
There was strong agreement that the first step needs to be a public awareness campaign to
increase familiarity with Hospice. It had been suggested in the early part of the session that
Hospice needs a public education effort, because knowledge of Hospice is primarily word of
mouth. One woman said that almost everyone has been touched by death and the need for
Hospice, yet many do not take advantage of it.
The group was in unison on the topic of a professional fund raising consultant to work with the
Capital Fund Raising Committee and coordinate the local effort. Participants drew on their
experience with other successful fund raising campaigns to support this recommendation. A
feasibility study was also suggested.
A core group drawn from those with personal experience as donors, workers, and those who's
families have been helped by Hospice would be key in the effort and raise community interest.
One participant felt that corporate sponsors would certainly be important, but Hospice should
look to families and the community most of its support. A couple of participants suggested the
need for a "sugar daddy" or two. The Goodmans were suggested as a possibility. However, it
was noted that a key to corporate sponsorship may be to find someone who was helped by
Hospice who was either employed by, or related to an employee of that corporation.
Someone noted a recent fund appeal from Hospice with a return address in Milwaukee. All
agreed that they throw away any requests to send money elsewhere. They are very skeptical
about money going elsewhere, even if the appeal states that the money comes back to Madison.
"How much of it?" quipped one to the laughter of the others.
Chamberlain Research Consultants
Page 16
