Veterans Hospital
The first person said his father-in-law is a patient there now and described the hospital as a place
for veteran care without charge. Another said she had read that they are closing wings and felt
badly about that. She said it was a place her parents, both veterans, would be able to go without
charge. Another said that the care was not up to par with what it should be. Most of the rest had
no impression or perception.
Attic Angels
Almost no one in the group knew anything about Attic Angels. One person knew that they had
retirement housing and held sales to raise funds. Another suggested it was an organization of
women volunteers who raise money for civic purposes and have a retirement home.
Saint Benedict Center
Four in the group were familiar with St. Benedict's and said it was a great retreat place,
ecumenical, positive and that they were restoring the prairie.
Awareness of Hospice Specifically
The first response was "I've heard great things about Hospice." Another said Hospice had taken
good care of his father-in-law and the experience was wonderful. Another mentioned seeing
Hospice noted in the obituaries frequently. His impression was Hospice keeps the dying
comfortable to the very end. Another had a friend who was helped by Hospice and said the
service provided was wonderful. Another worried that Hospice was also serving children and
she wasn't sure. Yet another said, "Everything I have is very positive."
Five of the respondents in this group said they were regular readers of the obituaries. Four said
they knew little or nothing about Hospice or had hearsay knowledge only. But most agreed they
knew more about the existence of Hospice than any of the other organizations mentioned.
Reaction to Literature
In this group, due to the lack of familiarity with Hospice, the moderator passed out two articles
describing what Hospice is and does. After reading the descriptions, respondents had the
following reactions:
"I learned that they deal with both living and dying and there is a real need for this
service."
"Why do so few people know about Hospice?"
"I like that they can get involved with the living aspect."
"Who pays for this? How is it paid for?"
Chamberlain Research Consultants
Page 18
