January 20, 1998 a F f
JAN 2 0 1998
Members of the Dane County Planning Board
Re: Petition # 7104 to Rezone D.C. PLANNING & DFVEL'jPMEN
ZON/NG DIVISIOf!
I am a resident of the Town of Cross Plains living in section 14 (SEC
14-7-7 ;W 1/4 NE 1/4) and I wish to make the following remarks
concerning the petition # 7104 to change the zoning of adjacent land owned
by Vera Riley.
The approval of a road to this property will only hasten the development
of the entire area surrounding the nearby gravel pit and Black Earth Creek.
This land is in the vicinity of the Ice Age Preserve and deserves special
consideration regarding all requests for zoning changes. The Cross Plains
Unit of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve is one of the most important
assets of the Township, the County and the State, and every effort should be
made to oversee development and building in the area.
When I purchased my land adjacent to what is now the Riley property
there were no buildings on Old Sauk Pass road except the Wilkie, Zander and
tleinholz farms. (Old Sauk Pass Road included what is now called North Birch
Trail.) In 1969 I built my small house (24'x32') in the woods below the
ridge of the hill using stone from the excavation and oak harvested from the
woods (as recommended by the most important historical figure of
Wisconsin, Frank Lloyd Wright.) My intention was to preserve the natural
appearance of the landscape as much as possible.
My view of the landscape is exceptional in that it takes in some of the
best characteristics of the terminal moraine area. fly property would be a
perfect viewing site for hikers using the Ice Age Trail and I would welcome
that use in the future. It is this view and the character of the adjacent
rural landscape that I wish to protect for future generations.
The June 11, 1997 letter from David Aslakson of the DNR regarding the
possible expansion of the Cross Plains Unit of the Ice Age Scientific
Reserve states that "some of the potential focuses of the study will be to
consider a number or significant ice age related geological features that are
found in the area along the terminal moraine (including) the management of
significant plant and animal communities associated with the glacial
landscape of the area.. and the protection of important glacial scenic views.-
