Mr. James Gregorius February 6, 1998
Dane County Zoning Administrator
Room 116, City-County Building
Madison 53709
Dear Mr. Gregorius:
I have previously notified you are my concerns about subdividing lands adjoining the historic
Battle of Wisconsin Heights site(copy attached). Additional information has become known
which strengthens a position opposing concentrated home site development.
In a cooperative grant received from the National Park Service, U. S. Department of Interior and
administered jointly by the Wisconsin State Historical Society and the Department of Natural
Resources, we have recently completed archaeology on the battle site with findings substantiating
(for the first time)that the battle took place in this vicinity. Because of this exiting new evidence,
this site will soon be nominated for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
I encourage your work group to carefully consider this unique resource and the devastating
impact subdividing can have on this locale. I'm confident town and county officials will recognize
their responsibilities for sharing in resource protection decisions with the other agencies involved.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if questions arise or additional information is needed.
Si erely,010 A.
a • D esfA'
Policy and Pl. ng Analyst
Bureau of Facility and Lands
cc: Wayne Schutte-Tower Hill State Park
Bob Birmingham-State Historical Society
Dr. Allen M.
