Madison Metro has developed a timed transfer route system and has presented the proposed
system to the general public at three public hearings in November of 1996. Input received at
these public hearings was incorporated into revisions of the schedule.
In order to facilitate the change in the system to a timed transfer system, it is necessary to
construct or provide for transfer points. The map on the following page illustrates the five
proposed locations for the transfer points. Four of the proposed transfer points are off-street
facilities and one is an on-street facility. The sites are proposed at the following locations:
• *Southwest Transfer Point - The intersection of Whitney Way and Tokay Blvd.
• *West Transfer Point - Sheboygan Avenue near the Hill Farms State Office
Building
• *North Transfer Point - The intersection of Aberg Avenue and Huxley Street
• *East Transfer Point - The intersection of Milwaukee Street and Corporate Drive
• South Transfer Point - The intersection of South Park Street and Badger Road
*Construction of four of the transfer points is currently underway.
These sites were selected by Madison Metro in conjunction with establishing the new routes and
input from the general public and neighborhood areas in close proximity to the potential sites.
Public meetings were held in September and October of 1996 in the specific neighborhoods
which were targeted for a transfer point location. The purpose of these meetings was to present
preliminary concepts to the public and to obtain input on design and safety issues and concerns.
This input was incorporated into the plans.
A detailed site description and setting of the South Transfer Point is included below. Copies of
the Site Plans are included in the Appendix for reference.
This site is located in the Town of Madison on the south side of the City of Madison in the
northwest quadrant of the intersection of South Park Street and Badger Road. This site is located
one block north of USH 12-18, the Beltline, which is the major east-west corridor for the City
of Madison. South Park Street is classified as a primary arterial and Badger Road is classified
as a collector. The City of Madison has acquired this property from a private owner. There is
an existing building on the site which has housed various retail businesses in the recent past.
Adjacent land uses include commercial and office(State of Wisconsin Office Building, restaurant,
printing shop, strip mall with office and retail, police and fire station).
Proposed improvements to the site include removal of the existing building and construction of
a paved area to provide parking for six buses with a pedestrian area in the center. Amenities
include site lighting, signing, landscaping, and a canopy. Access to the site will be on Badger
Road with the buses utilizing the signalized intersection of South Park Street and Badger Road
to their routes. Minor improvements will be made to the radius in the Northwest Corner of the
South Park Street and Badger Road intersection and Badger Road will be improved with
pavement markings and signing to provide for a left-turn storage area for the proposed site and
the intersection.
G:\METRO\SOUTH\CON DUSE
