Wisconsin Department of Transportation
/II 1111\\0 Division of Transportation Infrastructure
III Development
BUREAU OF AERONAUTICS
4802 Sheboygan Avenue, Room 701
P.O. On behalf of the Wisconsin aviation community and the farmers in central
and western Dane County, we hope this matter can be quickly resolved in a manner that will
allow the present and future use of Runway 3/21 at Verona Airpark.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has been assisting Mr. Slotten in the processing of
the necessary Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) forms required for the new runway
alignment. Since the runway numbers were changed 10 degrees (from 4/22 to 3/21), the FAA
forms were completed and submitted in a timely manner and are a matter of record.
Using this new alignment will take aircraft away from the new HWY 151/18 bypass. The
existing alignment 4/22 is still in use as that runway has never been closed. The large berm
constructed for the bypass limits the viability of that runway, and the airport as a functional air
transportation facility. The Verona Airpark has been open to the public since it was first
developed in the early 1960's, at no public expense and is viewed as a valuable public use asset.
Without the use of this public access runway (3/21) in western Dane County, the local farmers
do not have a readily accessible facility for crop dusting, should the need arise. At the present
time, Morey Airport's status is in question and it is actually pretty far away to be viable for crop
dusting in the Verona area. Both Dane County Regional in Madison and Blackhawk in Cottage
Grove are too far away, or impractical for use by crop dusters. Now that Mt. Horeb is closed,
the next closest public use landing areas are Lone Rock and Sauk Prairie. Neither of these
would be viable options for Dane County farmers west and south of the Madison/Verona area.
DT1454 Solving tomorrow's transportation challenges
