(See Drawing A).
" C. Number of Students and Professional Staff Members
The total number of children that can be served in the proposed building
is between 85-90. To serve these children, our center will need to hire about
five full-time professional academic teachers and 1 or 2 part-time fine arts
teachers. Sandra S. Dahl, a former elementary teacher and UW-Madison
Early Childhood Professor, will serve as Center Director and be involved with
instruction at all levels. Wilmer A. Dahl, currently the CEO of the Wisconsin
Milk Marketing Board, will serve as financial advisor to the center and assist
with administrative tasks.
D. Issues Related to Curriculum and Instruction
The philosophy of the Kids Express Learning Center will closely follow the
successful early childhood programs in the northern Italian city of Reggio
Emilia ( see Appendix B). In our program, children will be encouraged to be
actively involved in creating their own learning programs while being
challenged, encouraged, and evaluated by qualified professional teachers. Our
daily indoor and outdoor activities will build children's self-confidence,
promote social/emotional well-being, and create academic excitement.
Literature, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies will form the
core of our academic program. The fine arts of dance, music and art will be
taught by qualified professionals. Our students will be offered daily
opportunities to learn about nature and the environment. They will observe
and interact with animals located on our property adjacent to the center. The
students will study plant life, small animals, birds, and insect life in the
center's greenhouse/butterfly sanctuary and in the woodlands adjacent to our
center.
Sincerely,
40/2
Sandra S. Dahl, Ph.D.
Center Director
