The 40 acre parcel that Dane County Public Works has purchased
(see attached map) was approved for use as a borrow site by the Town of Verona and
the Dane County Zoning and Natural Resources Committee during March 1994.
Because one of the conditions specified by the existing CUP (#1225) for this clay
borrow site required that project be completed during 1995, Dane County Public
Works is requesting a new CUP that will allow the work to be completed during 1996.
Work during 1995 at the Verona Landfill included placement, compaction and testing
of a 2-foot thick clay layer as well as a 2-foot cover layer. A the present time roughly
2/3 of the cover work is now complete on the landfill top. Approximately 80 percent of
the clay has been removed from the borrow area with only a 250 foot wide strip at the
southern edge of the borrow area to be completed. Dane County personnel will
continue to work at the landfill site over the winter by placing topsoil and compost over
the otherwise finished section of the landfill cap.
