State of Wisconsin \ DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
WISCONSIN 101 South Webster Street
Box 7921
OUT. OF NATURAL RESOURCES Madison, Wisconsin 53707
George E. Meyer
TELEPHONE 608-266-2621
Secretary TELEFAX 608-267-3579
TDD 608-267-6897
CORRECTED COPY
March 23, 1995 IN REPLY REFER TO: 3320
John and Ardell Dahl
6013 Winnequah Road 9 "" -.
Madison, WI 53716 {;: ; 7=' I ',;l'.`?N
C ,ri'.1i,;„:: : OF APPROVAL
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Dahl:
The Private Water Supply Section has received and reviewed your request for a
variance to construct wells within 1, 200 feet of the nearest edge of an
existing, proposed or abandoned landfill site.
The Department is authorized by chapters 144 and 162, Stats. , to have general
supervision and control over the waters of the state and to establish and
enforce standards and rules for obtaining drinking water and protecting public
health against polluted water supplies . Chapter NR 812, Wis . Adm. Code, is
adopted pursuant to that authority. Section NR 812.08(4) (g)1, Wis. Adm. Code,
requires a minimum separating distance of 1,200 feet be provided between a
well or reservoir and the nearest edge of an existing, proposed or abandoned
landfill site.
According to the information you supplied, you own property located in the
part of the NW1/, of Section 28 , T7N, R11E, Town of Cottage Grove, Dane County.
A preliminary plat of the property has been prepared.
An abandoned land fill that was operated by the Township of Cottage Grove is
also located in the NE1A of NW1A of Section 28, directly across from Nating Road
and within 100 feet from the above-described property.
An examination of the water table map for Dane County (United States
Geological Survey Water-Supply Paper 1779-U,1965) indicates that regional
groundwater flow in the vicinity of your property and the land fill could be
flowing in a westerly direction. More recent unpublished information on file
with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey indicates that
regional groundwater flow could also be in a more northwesterly direction. In
addition, water level measurements for monitoring wells installed in the
unconsolidated deposits around the landfill indicate that shallow groundwater
could be flowing in a more southerly direction.
Based upon the fact that the assumed direction of shallow groundwater flow
could be in a direction not directly toward the lot the Department has
concluded that a variance could be granted. However, because of the proximity
of some of the lots to the landfill, the wells will have to be provided with
more casing than normally would be required at a site fully complying with the
location requirements of s. NR 812.08 , Wis. Adm. Code.
The Department emphasizes that while a variance from ch. NR 812, Wis . Adm.
Code, requirements may be granted, compliance with ch. NR 812, Wis. Adm. Code
Pried oo
Recycled
Paper
