JAMES VAN DEURZEN ZONING & CUP
My name is Larry Lichte and I am a neighbor to Mr . Van Deurzen , having owned
my farms for many years . I 'm sure we wouldn ' t be here tonight if we were
talking about 2 horses and some boat storage . BUT, we are strongly opposed
to the illegal use of the glass blowing business .
A . The proposed use is contrary to the Town Land Use Plan . This business
belongs in the Mazomanie Industrial Park . The fact that it has been an
illegal use for the past 11 years should not justify allowing it to continue .
This proposed use is against the type thing Mr . Van Deurzen consistently
opposes in others . You can be sure that if one of his constituents were
aking for this change that he would vote against it , and I 'm asking that this
board vote against his petition .
B . Approval of Mr . Van Deurzen ' s request would set a bad precedent . Others
will than take the position that they should be granted permission for uses
not in the land use plan of the Township . Soon there will be no standards .
C . Mr . Van Deurzen has publicly stated that he wants to "Preserve the Rural
Character" , so let ' s leave the residences and ag setting and not allow this
type of business . Its not ag related . A July 1996 article states , "Van
Deurzen describes himself as a moderate who wants to preserve the rural
character of Dane County" . LETS GRANT HIM THAT WISH .
D . An August 3 , 1996 Wisconsin State Journal article also quotes Mr . Van
Deurzen with respect to his glass blowing business---"I want to be 100 per
cent in compliance . . . " The Town of Mazomanie Board at its meeting last week
deferred any action of this petition pending looking at compliance issues .
The Town Board rightfully felt responsible to defer action until they knew
more about this business , particularly its possible negative environmental
impact . There are a number of unanswered questions :
1 . What colorants are used and possibly escaping?
2 . What safeguards are there for storage , cleaning with solvents ,
and proper disposal? How are waste streams managed?
3 . What lead is used in the operation? What organic compounds
are used?
- 4 . What air pollutants might there be emitted into the air?
5 . Look at the furnace for safety and emissions--How hot does
this furnace get? Does it meet industry standards?
6 . Safety issues pertinent to owner , employees , guests and
neighbors .
7 . Is this facility in compliance with local , State & Federal Regs?
I trust your board concerns would parallel that of the Town of Mazomanie , and
that this business be thoroughly looked into before making a decision on this
important matter .
You may have noticed I said "WE" on several occasions . While I am the
only one speaking against this petition, I would like to submit these
petitions of concerned citizens who are opposed to this glass blowing
business . A least two other pages were filled but I did not have an
opportunity to get them picked up for tonight ' s meeting .
Thank you for your careful consideration of this matter . Please vote against
the proposed zoning change with CUP , as it relates to the glass blowing
business .
