Tom Borchert 4146233431 P. 02 I
Marian Lichtenwalner
6422 York Heights Road
Waterloo, WI 53594
March 28, 1997
Dane County Zoning & Natural
Resources Committee
City-County Building
Madison, WI
Committee Members:
As a long-time resident of the Town of York, I want to express my
opposition to the application of Mark Smithback to rezone a piece
of wooded property so that he can build a house.
I specifically oppose the rezoning of this property because it is
quite removed from the main road and will require a very long
access road to reach it. That access road will have to be built
on either farmland or low, marshy land. Both options are, in my
opinion, undesirable and inappropriate. Approval of this request
will set a bad precedent for future requests .
My opposition goes beyond the development of this particular
piece of property, however. When I moved to York Heights Road
twenty years ago, I moved to the country. I didn't move to
suburbia. Now, when I drive into Madison or Sun Prairie or even
Marshall, I note with great sadness the relentless destruction of
rural Dane County. Every day, precious, productive farmland is
being converted to housing developments . It sometimes seems as
if every stand of woods has at least one house on it. If the
Town of York is at all interested in retaining its rural nature,
it is time to take a stand against the willy-nilly, hodge-podge
development of its farmland and woodland.
Please understand that I have nothing against Mark Smithback; I
don't even know him. In fact, I completely understand his desire
to live on that lovely piece of property. I am simply not
interested in seeing the Town of York become the next Town of
Madison or Town of Sun Prairie. The line must be drawn some
where, and I believe this is it.
Very truly yours,
Marian Lichtenwalner
