Zoning and Natural Resources Committee O n
Dane County Zoning Department
Room 116 City-County Building
Madison, WI 53709
Re : CUP # 1262
Howard Lien and Sons
14 6 i DEVELOPMENT
Zoning and Natural Resources Committe : `ON
The Citizens for Rural Land Preservation wish to address 11 -
# 1262 with some comments on various points presented in
the"Response to Town Board ' s Recommendations" .
• It should be clearly stated that the Citizens for Rural Land
Preservation do not wish this CUP to be allowed. We gathered
together in a loose organization when the tenor of our rural
land was threatened by a 190 acre quarry. Traffic , noise ,
dust , blasting , all threaten the peaceful way of life in
this area and over 210 citizens signed a petition to
disallow this CUP.
The Town Board has reluctantly admitted that the quarry
falls into the category of "agricultural use of the land"
under the Dane County Land Plan, and has suggested a number
of conditions for the granting of the permit .
Since it is apparent that this CUP might be granted we feel
we need to address several issues raised in Mr . Lien' s
document .
Page 2 , # 2 . "The Town Board ' s proposals appear to be based
on some unstated impact on the Dane County Park and the
citizens in the Town of Christiana , Village of Rockdale and
Village of Cambridge . No such impact has occurred with
existing quarries in the area and quarrying in this areas
would not have any impact on the citizens of the Town of
Christiana, Village of Rockdale and Village of Cambridge . "
Comment : The Dane County Park Commission has voted 6 to 1
to disallow this CUP, because of its proximity to the park ,
with the attendant noise and blasting and possible
environmental impact on the plant and wildlife of the area.
It is almost impossible to believe that the nearby citizens
would not be impacted by the presence of a 190 acre quarry.
The noise from haulage alone , the rocks flying off of
trucks , dust , and blasting all can be experienced for quite
a distance from a quarry. The present quarries are
extremely small compared to the planned 190 quarry and
cannot be compared to this giant .
