ALLISON TREE CARE, INC.
1312 CULMEN STREET
MADISON, WI 53713
608 257-4126
December 20, 2001
William Gilbert
1750 Beach Road
Verona, WI 53593
Re:Tree Inspection and Protection Plan Town of Westport Development
Dear Mr. Gilbert:
At your request I have visited your development site in the Town of Westport to inspect
and describe the tree cover and provide a tree protection plan to protect two oaks during
development. Attachments to this report include two aerial photographs locating the
property, a site grading plan by TDI Associates and four photographs taken by me on
December 19.
The site is a wet, disturbed, non-native woods consisting primarily of smaller stem
cottonwood, boxelder, willow, black locust, dogwood and honeysuckle. Near the road
are two red oaks, a single trunk ( 28.5 inches in diameter) approximately 14 feet from the
asphalt road and a double stem(15 inches and 14 inches in diameter) approximately 30
feet from the road. Both trees appear in good condition with no significant trunk decay
and normal bud development and distribution.
I recommend the following for a tree protection plan to avoid damage to the oaks during
• construction:
1 1. Use a chain link fence or a snow fence with a 2x4 wood top rail to enclose the
oaks with a minimum distance of 20 feet from the trunks. The fence should be
installed and completely enclose the trees prior to any construction work and
remain in place until all danger of root damage has passed.
2. Avoid any soil compaction or grading within the protected area.
3. Route all utilities outside of the protected zone. If it is absolutely necessary to
pass through the zone then tunnel rather than trench in the root zone.
4. Communicate to all construction workers and subcontractors the importance of
tree protection, place signs on the fence designating the area as a tree protection
zone, and assign responsibility to enforce the tree protection plan to someone with
authority on the general contractor's staff.
5. To avoid the introduction of oak wilt, be sure no pruning is conducted from April
15 through October 1. If a wound is made during that time be prepared to
