P 02 <br /> • • <br /> 628.1 <br /> Wood fiber, wood chips or similar material shall be applied with approved blowing ' <br /> machines or other approved methods which will place a controlled amount of mulch <br /> uniformly over the area to a depth of 1/2 to 1-I/2 inches.Areas to be mulched with wood '1 <br /> chips shall be treated with one pound of available nitrogen per 1000 square feet of area <br /> either prior to or after application of the chips. <br /> Throughout the process,the mulch material shall be fed into the blowing machine to <br /> produce a constant and uniform ejection from the discharge spout,operated in a position 4 <br /> to produce a mulch of uniform depth and coverage. i <br /> 627.3.2.3 Method C.The straw or hay mulch shall be uniformly spread over the desig- <br /> nated areas to a loose depth of 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches,using 1-1/2 to 3 tons of mulch per acre, <br /> by blowing from a machine,as described in Method B, or by other approved methods. <br /> Immediately after spreading, the mulch shall be anchored in the soil by the use of a <br /> mulch tiller consisting of a series of dull,flat discs with notched edges. The discs shall be <br /> approximately 20 inches in diameter and shall be spaced at about eight-inch centers.The • i <br /> ' tiller shall be equipped with a ballast compartment to permit adjustment of the weight for j, <br /> depth control <br /> The mulch shall be impressed in the soil to a depth of approximately 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 ! <br /> inches in one pass of the tiller traveling longitudinally.Mulch tillers shall not be operated i + <br />`! `„ on slopes so steep that damage to the mulch,seedbed or soil occurs.The mulch on such <br /> areas shall be anchored by either Method A or Method B.Tractors shall be equipped and <br /> operated to minimize the disturbance or displacement of the soil. More than one pass of <br /> the tiller may be required to assure adequate anchoring of the mulch. <br /> i <br /> 627.4 Method of Measurement.The item of Mulching will be measured by the square <br /> yard or by the ton as provided in the contract. <br /> When measured by the square yard,the quantity to be measured for payment shall be <br /> the number of square yards of surface area on which the mulch has been placed and I <br /> accepted in accordance with the contract, r <br /> When measured by the ton, the quantity to be measured for payment shall be the : Ili <br /> number of tons of mulch furnished,placed and accepted in accordance with the contract. <br /> Asphaltic material, or other approved mulch binders or nitrogen used for treating �� <br /> mulch will not be measured for payment but will be considered as subsidiary to and i. <br /> included as a part of the item. <br /> • 627.5 Basis of Payment.The quantity,measured as provided above,will be paid for at iI <br /> the contract unit price per square yard or per ton for Mulching,which price shall be full iI i ' <br /> compensation for furnishing all materials,including asphaltic material or other approved ;i <br /> mulch binders or nitrogen;for all hauling,treating,placing,spreading and anchoring of 4 <br /> the mulch material;for maintenance of the work and repair of any damaged areas;and <br /> for furnishing all labor,tools,equipment and incidentals necessary to complete the work. <br /> P <br /> SECTION 628. EROSION CONTROL <br /> 82$.1 Description.
