September 12, 1994
Mr. William Fleck, Director
Dane County Zoning Department
210 Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd.
Madison, WI 53703
RE: Duane& Joyce Haag property on Hwy 19, Township of Berry, Dane County, WI
Dear Mr. Fleck:
It has come to my attention that a complaint has been filed against Mr. &Mrs. Haag
concerning restricting the number of vehicles they will be permitted to have at their new
DH Repair Shop on Hwy 19 in Marxville.
I am astounded that this matter should come before the Dane Zoning Board at all. This
issue has been thoroughly discussed at Town Board meetings on several occasions. It has
come to a vote and the majority ruled in favor of lifting the type of restriction proposed
for the new Haag development. It is obvious to me, having attended many of the town
board meetings that one of our board members refuses to accept that in a democracy, the
majority rules. This board member, for whatever reason, insists on carrying out a personal
vendetta against the Haag family. Enough is enough. We have only a handful of viable
businesses in the Town of Berry. Our township and yes, Dane County, ought to be doing
everything possible in order to encourage a family owned small business to grow and
prosper.
This township has a habit of passing new ordinances which it has neither the means nor the
capacity to enforce. One such example is an ordinance that states that there shall be no
junked vehicles in sight of township roads. The Town of Berry is loaded with junked
vehicles and yet nothing is done about that. When I raised that very question at the town
board meeting, I was informed that there was no one who could enforce this ordinance.
I suggest that you spend your time and that of the Zoning Board in trying to encourage
rather than discourage the few businesses the Town of Berry hosts. I further suggest that
you spend your time helping this township to enforce ordinances it has on the books which
will provide a positive result such as beautification.
Mr. &Mrs. Haag struggle to provide a very valuable service to residents of our township.
It is impossible for them to know when they take a vehicle in for repair, what will be
required in the way of parts or whether or not those parts needed will be in stock. It is
reasonable that a vehicle may have to be parked waiting for parts. In addition, it is
