DANE COUNTY
HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
2302 Fish Hatchery Road, Madison, Wisconsin 53713
phone: 266-4261
•
November 25, 1992
C :2)
Mr. William Buglass
Payne and Dolan, Inc.
5338 Norway Grove Road
DeForest, WI 53532
RE: Access for Mineral Extraction, CTH "I"
A few weeks ago, we discussed this proposed access and a couple of options
for an improvement to the CTH "I" and Easy Street intersection. We both
agreed that some changes would be necessary in order to move truck traffic
safely and efficiently on and off CTH "I".
Traffic data gathered in October indicates that between 1700 and 1850
vehicles a day use this section of CTH "I". Northbound and southbound
volumes are nearly equal and the morning and afternoon peak (2 hours per
day) account for nearly 22 percent of total traffic. Considering this
data, we anticipate no major problems with the projected increase in truck
traffic, provided we properly address access geometry.
Undoubtedly, you expect this new site to benefit the overall efficiency of
your operation, resulting in a net savings to your customers, Dane County
included. Our department is committed to providing a level of maintenance
the public has grown to expect and, at the same time, finance necessary
capital improvement projects. Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more
difficult to do that because our operating costs continue to rise.
It's very important that aggregate sources are nearby and readily
available. We use approximately 45,000 cubic yards of crushed aggregate
annually for roadway improvements and maintenance. That amounts to a
considerable investment. From our perspective, anything having a potential
to reduce inflationary impacts on our budget is worth pursuing. We look
forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
DANE COUNTY HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT
Dennis Le/Norton, P.E. , Assistant Commissioner
j
ast:\word5\access\p&dcthi
