Hamilton St., Suite 403, Madison, Wisconsin 53703-3238 Tel. 608/266-4137
4*/ CrEl
MEMORANDUM
TO: Gary Gunderman
al
FROM: Mark Schroe,Ndeer-I JAN 2 2 1993
DATE: January 21 , 1993 BEC VED
ZONING DIV.
RE: Potential Groundwater Impacts of Quarrying
in the Town of Vienna (CUP #1041 )
A review of information on file at the Regional Planning Commission indicates
that the proposed mining operation in Section 34 of the Town of Vienna should
not threaten groundwater supplies in nearby wells as long as routine steps are
taken to clean up any contaminants. Also, the post mining contours of the
site should not affect groundwater or surface water drainage or recharge.
Page I of the operator 's information packet indicates 35 feet of sandstone
between the quarry floor and the high water table. Private well logs from the
area confirm this. Therefore, quarrying operations will not be in contact
with groundwater levels. Also, sandstone provides some attenuation capacity
which would reduce the chance of contamination from fuel spills. It is still
advisable that spills be contained and cleaned up. Perhaps refueling can take
place on an impervious surface near the operations platform shown on page D.
The quarry site is located on the surface drainage divide between the Yahara
River and Sixmile Creek. The area functions as a groundwater recharge area,
and will continue to function as a recharge area during and after quarrying.
There are no nearby lakes or streams to be affected by recontouring the site
during mining. Therefore, there Is no anticipated adverse impact on surface
water drainage, or groundwater recharge.
I talked to Bill Fleck relative to noise and blasting impacts. Bill indicated
that he has information pertinent to these topics, so I will defer to him on
those questions.
MS: lel
cc: Bill Fleck, Dane Co.
