Mr. bill Buglass ZGEO, LLC <br /> Hydrogeoiogic Assessment <br /> coomonitoring of groundwater conditions. The findings and conclusions presented in this report are <br /> subject to the limitations discussed at the end of the report. <br /> RELEVANT ASPECTS OF DESIGN AND OPERATION <br /> The proposed site (Site) includes 32 acres of farmland owned by Lloyd and Ruth Klahn and is <br /> bordered on the north by Wingra Stone Company, on the west by the C & NW Railroad, on the <br /> south by Fox Glen Partners and on the east by CTH MM. The proposed total extraction and <br /> operations area is 18.2 acres. The initial extraction and operations area includes approximately <br /> 5.4 acres in which gravel will be removed from an elevation of 980— 984 feet above mean sea <br /> level (msl) to an elevation of approximately 961 feet msl. Future phase 1 includes approximately <br /> 6.1 acres, future phase 2 includes approximately 3.6 acres, and future phase 3 includes 4.1 <br /> acres. The draft reclamation plan includes an excavated pond approximately 11.2 acres in area <br /> and developable land approximately 20.8 acres in area. According to the operational plans, the <br /> Site will be mined for approximately 15 years. <br /> Sand and gravel will be excavated to a minimum depth of twenty-five feet below the water table <br /> by using a backhoe and/or drag line. Excess water will be allowed to gravity drain from sand and <br /> gravel stockpiled at the edge of the excavation discharging back to the excavated pit. There will <br /> be no blasting at the Site and fuel and other chemicals will not be stored at the Site. <br /> The proposed design includes several features that limit or eliminate the potential for offsite <br /> groundwater and surface water impacts from the project: <br /> 1. The proposed sand and gravel extraction site is designed for "in the wet" operations, <br /> meaning that no dewatering activities/groundwater pumping will be conducted to lower <br /> the water table and no discharge of pumped groundwater will be released to surface <br /> waters. A well will not be installed as part of the operation. <br /> 2. The current project plans indicate that the Site will be isolated from local surface runoff <br /> patterns using constructed earthen berms. The berms will be 10 feet high and will <br /> surround the operation on all sides with the exception of the area where there are <br /> existing structures. The berms will be built during initial Site development. <br /> 3. Sand and gravel washing will be conducted with water only, without the use of process <br /> chemicals, and no wash water will be discharged from the site. <br /> SUMMARY OF HYDROGEOLOGIC CONDITIONS <br /> The Site topography indicates that, in general, the west and central part of the property is at an <br /> elevation of approximately 984 feet msl. Land elevation decreases at the eastern edge of the <br /> property to approximately 976 feet msl. According to Clayton and Attig (1997), the Site has <br /> deposits of sand and gravel deposited by braided streams that carried glacial meltwater during <br /> the Wisconsin Glaciation. In the area of the Site, sands and gravels were deposited on stagnant <br /> ice resulting in hummocky topography. No wetlands or surface water bodies are present at the <br /> Site. <br /> The four hydrogeologic units of Dane County have been described by Bradbury and others in <br /> Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Open-File Report 1999-04. Each of these units <br /> consist of groups of stratigraphic units.
