•
DANE COUNTY
Zoning and Natural Resources Committee
SUPPLEMENTAL RPC STAFF COMMENTS 1/28/92
Petition 5216. At the public hearing, the applicant stated that the
site had less productive soils and had not been farmed. Soils maps
indicate the soils are primarily "prime farmland" as defined by USDA.
Further review of the soil survey indicates that the primary soil on the
site is:
"McHenry silt loam, 2 to 6 percent slopes (MdB) . This soil is on
the top of ridges and upper side slopes. Areas of this soil are
elongated 25 to 265 acres in size. Included with this soil in
mapping are areas where this soil is eroded and has poorer tilth
and lower organic-matter content . Also included are small areas
of a Dodge silt loam and areas of soils that have a mantle of
loess 10 to 15 inches thick. Capability unit Ile-1 . "
The USDA does classify the McHenry silt loam as "prime farmland; "
however , the detailed soil description notes the inclusion of areas
which have been eroded and are less productive.
The site meets all other policy criteria and also appears to meet the
intent of the soil criteria of protecting the most productive soils.
1
