•
•
•
After checking around, it appears that the concern regarding the
handling of truck traffic has been addressed, although not in a
manner favorable to me, the neighboring businesses or even the
community. I understand the county has agreed that Hwy V is not
adequate and would consider putting in a double lane road. The
state would enlarge the interchange. The result of these two moves
would mean the loss of the property in front of my restaurant and
the taking of some property to the west . It would also necessitate
a change in the access to my property, making it difficult to get
to. What does this mean to me? Pure & simple - OUT OF BUSINESS! ! !
Two and one half years ago, when I bought this property, I was
complimented by many in the community for establishing local
ownership and for being committed to serving the local person.
Since that time, we have focussed on serving first and foremost our
local patron, while extending tine service to all our customers -
traveling and local . The local people have been very positive in
responding to this service. We still have a ways to go, but feel
our early efforts have been successful . I employ between 45-50
people from DeForest and the surrounding community in the summer
and about 25 the rest of the year. Across the street, Rider 's
Standard Service has spent a considerable amount of money in
remodeling and improving his facility. McDonalds has been a good
addition and has complimented the interchange. Ehlenbach's Cheese
Chalet has always attracted a nice mixture of tours and visitors ,
and is considered to be one of the finest cheese houses on the
interstate. I firmly believe heavy truck traffic on and off the
interstate will drastically cut the normal auto traffic and will
seriously damage the health of our businesses . People will not be
willing to take the extra effort needed to reach Big Top, Standard
Service or Ehlenbach's when there are other restaurants, gas
stations and gift stores just a few exits down the road. And we
will not make up the business through truckers. We all cater to
the traveling and local family.
The final decision is up to you. I have to think the only reason
you can be considering this is the six million dollar tax base
addition. If you put it through, I will be convinced you have no
concern for the local , small business, or the ultimate future of
this area. And knowing you, I know that 's not the case.
Sincerely,
M vin G. Swedal
cc: J. Moore
L. Hahn ✓
J. Ehlenbach
J. Rider
