Skindrud, a farmer whose green
space has been preserved by the
A request for a conditional use land he farms, will stand with the
permit for an airport in the Town of large_body of constituents from
Springdale has been submitted to Springdale to vote against this
the Town Board by William proposal and that the other
Garfoot. members of the Committee will
Over 300 residents of the Town support him
of Springdale feel an uncontrolled
airport introduced into the valley pat Hitchcock
that watersheds the Deer Creek and Warren Burger
Mount Vernon Creek is not Rick Crmde
appropriate to its present land use.
Why is this valley as unspoiled
as it is? Because one woman in her
nineties, Delma Woodburn, has
spent her life trying to keep her
three family farms as farms and
because there are younger farmers
who still want to farm. It's not the
Zoning and the Land Use Plans that
are saving our green space for us.
,j
It's the working farmers.
Conditional uses, variances,
easements and money are chipping
away at our countryside. However,
there is much more to our resistance
to this particular airport proposal
than another urban invasion of
farm land.
1. In actuality,neither the safety
and appropriateness of a landing
site nor the conditions under which
it is allowed to exist are monitored
by any federal, state, county or
local boards.
2. It puts the burden of
' eillm _=3. l
P aL.t .;a
neighbors who didn't want it in the
first place. t
3. This particular site has been
declared unsafe as an airport by
other. pilots.
4. It burdens the community-in-
place with noise, nuisance,
invasion of privacy and other
related problems they have lived
here or moved here to avoid.
S. An airport reduces property
values around it and limits the
market to those who can afford
their own planes.
6. It is counterproductive to the
DNR and Agricultural Extension
work with landowners here to
encourage wildlife habitats for
recreational use in the Mount
Vernon Creek area.
7. The Applicant could offer no
suggestions as to how this'would ,
benefit the Springdale Township
and local residents when asked to
speak on this issue.
8. Accepting proprau
forces the town and county
planning boards to consider similar
proposals in the future on
precedence,not merit.
We need airports for pilots. We
need to determine up front how they
can safely and appropriately fit I
into a proper land use plan so an
applicant will not have to defend I
his need as Mr.Garfoot did.
We are glad our town board had
the courage and foresight-to vote
unanimously against this proposal.
I hope our representative to the
County Zoning Committee, Rick
