I strongly urge you to reject the rezoning because it is
contrary to all of the intergovernmental planning agreements for protecting
Cherokee Marsh.
The City of Madison strongly supported the intergovernmental planning effort
which resulted in the adoption of a Long Range Plan for Cherokee Marsh in
1981. Other participants in the planning process were State, County and Town
agencies, as well as citizens from all jurisdictions. It appears that one-
third of the proposed rezoning is actually wetland, and approximately 70% is
designated as open space on the Cherokee Marsh Plan. Furthermore, the
Cherokee Plan was never intended to support development outside the open space
boundary, but rather to identify the most important areas for protection and
acquisition. In the decade since the Cherokee Plan was adopted, we have not
been aware of any Town or County Plan (proposed or adopted) which proposed
anything other than agricultural use for this property. Many of the agencies
that adopted and and participated in the Cherokee Marsh Plan may not even be
aware of this proposal.
1
