Dane County Zoning and Natural Resources Committee
Page 2
July 14, 1992
Although it has been a decade since the Cherokee Plan was adopted, I believe
that today there is even greater support for protection of the marsh. City,
County and Town actions to stop the proposed Yahara Center subdivision are
evidence of the public desire for greater protection of land near the marsh.
Further evidence is found in the County Greenspace Plan (1991) and the Madison
Peripheral Area Development Plan (1990) . Both plans show greater protection
of upland along wetlands than the older Cherokee Marsh Plan. We have
advocated that the Cherokee Plan should be reviewed and updated. Cherokee
Marsh should be recognized as the largest wetland in Dane County and given
appropriate priority for protection. When compared to some of the other open
space projects in the County, I believe that the Cherokee Marsh project
boundary would be expanded to provide greater protection of upland along the
marsh, especially if the adjacent use was development instead of agriculture.
In conclusion, I urge you to reject this rezoning which is incompatible with
all adopted plans for the area, and which poses a serious threat to the
continuing preservation of the Cherokee Marsh.
Sincerely,
Daniel R. Stapay —
Superintendent of Parks
DRS:SW:br
cc: Mayor Paul Soglin
George Austin, Planning Director
Ken LePine, Dane County Parks
Burke Town Chairman
Westport Town Chairman
Windsor Town Chairman
Tom Favour, Regional Planning Commission
Gordon Priegel, Department of Natural Resources
2
