I have one week of vacation that had been scheduled some
time ago to visit relatives in Colorado. I attempted to find an appropriate
alternate representative from the Foundation to take my place. Unfortunately
all of our Dane County directors are also either out of town or have other
commitments during the time of your tour. This memo and the attached material
present the thoughts that I would have given you in person.
There are several background observations I would make to you as you view
the Maurer property:
I ) Please notice the dramatic contrast between the residential development
all along the Terminal Moraine on the east side of Timber Lane and the agricul-
tural open space on the west side of Timber Lane.
2) Imagine for a moment the dramatic events of 15,000 years ago when a great
ice sheet stood just to the east and swept for 800 miles to the arctic while
meltwater collected as cold lakes in the basins just north of the Maurer property
and north of Mineral Point Road. To preserve these features and interpret them
for public benefit the National Park Service has proposed developing Timber Lane
as an interpretive roadway leading to the Cross Plains Unit of the Ice Age
National Scientific Reserve. (see the attached letter of August 12, 1991 and the
maps and National Park Service brochure for a more complete explanation
of the geological significance of this landscape. )
3) Please note the public investment that has already been made by the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Department of Natural Resources to preserve
the wetlands and uplands of the basin north of Mineral Point Road as a waterfowl
and grassland bird habitat area. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has a long-
term goal of preserving the wetlands and uplands of the basin immediately north
of and including the north edge of the Maurer property.
7(f k Br it\f a U AA II(IO(K1
\\ UIR)AAAA )A UAA (.I),V U,
li RR((I( (I I?
