#4-C CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT APPLICATION
The problem is the result of Dane County and Town of Verona adopting an A-1
Exclusive Zoning Policy. In 1980, Verona Airpark was an airport and was
registered (one of the first in Wisconsin when airports were first registered
in Wisconsin - 1960. ) It was an airport then and thirty years later it is
still an airport. It never should have been zoned A-1 because it, in fact;
was not a farm. It is true; in the last thirty years ten thousand acres of
sweet corn and peas and other cash crops have been treated from this little
airport annually.
In 1991, Richard Doerfer, dairy farmer, had a problem with alfalfa beetle
destroying his hay crop. He had to call in a helicopter from Janesville. It
used Verona Airpark. It was trailered to Verona Airpark because of expense of
operation.
In 1990 we had helicopters --- one that was priced at 4.5 million dollars. The
man brought his family to visit the rest of the family in the Maple Grove area
from the Chicago area. (Recreation) We also had National Pipe Lines Bell Jet
Ranger (Dallas, Texas) operate out of Verona for the better part of a week.
The helicopter is priced at 4.9 million dollars. (Business)
Verona Airpark is an asset that Verona desperately needs. With great
foresight; Verona Mayor Kasieta has joined in the promotion of Verona Airpark
as one of the assets Verona cannot afford to lose. The Verona City Council
has gone on record as agreeing with him in the form of a Resolution supporting
and encouraging the continued use and conservation of Verona Airpark as a
vital resource.
Every year since 1960, the Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics, as required by
law, has conducted an inspection by aviation experts. It has always passed
inspection with compliments regarding maintenance and safety. What the Public
does not understand and various governing bodies do not understand, is that
these little turf surfaced airports are provided "gratis" to the community.
Truax Airport is recognized as Madison's valuable asset and it is considered
self-supporting even though several million dollars are received and spent by
Federal Government and Dane County on it alone. We send the money to
Washington, DC; they subtract administration costs and return a portion of
that money to Truax.
The Bank of Verona, a small country bank; in 1990 had a spare computor part
for their computer. Due to the "not quite on time'" syndrome of the computer
industry, one or more parts failed in a bank in Montana. One of those parts
was exactly like the spare part the Bank of Verona had on hand. By
coincidence, John Schunk, Vice-President of Verona Bank; owns a Cessna 182
airplane and keeps it at Verona Airpark. In a matter of minutes, John was on
his way to Montana with the vital part that weighed probably less than a
packaged book.. The Bank in Montana had minimum "down time..' John had a very
enjoyable trip to Montana at a beautiful time of the year. He was back in his
office in a matter of about three hours. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO DO THAT.
