In 1991 John flew in computer experts from Eau Claire during a computer update
that went wrong. This is exactly why Quad Graphics, when it decided to
relocate to a small town in Wisconsin, placed its highest priority that the
town selected MUST HAVE AN AIRPORT OR IT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Quote - Quad
Graphics. This statement says it all. It is the sign of the times. It is
the handwriting on the wall for the future of a town or city,
The relocation of Hwy, 18-151 will bring industry and commerce to Verona so
say the Planners. It is interesting that this relocation will also provide
Verona with a bream 15 foot high (at present, specifications not cast in
concrete. ) It will be placed at some point (not yet determined) between
Verona and the existing airport. The noise foot print will be over isolated
area to the east, the bream and the resulting movement eastward will move the
foot print further from East View - an ideal situation.
There is always the question of wild life and its compatibility with the
aircraft. In over fifty years of airport and aviation experience; of one
thing I am certain, airplanes and wild life co-exist peacefully together, The
only red fox in Kane County, Illinois, live at Aurora; Illinois, Airport 15'
from the runway. Every year we have some aviator come wide-eyed to tell us
"Did you know that there are deer right alongside the runway?" Our question
has always been as it always will be - ''Did they bother you?' The answer is
always "No, but they are pretty!" Then, of course; we must ask "Did you
bother them?" The answer has been for over thirty years, "No, they seem to be
used to the airplanes and never even get up; just casually turn to watch us."
To further illustrate the point, I have a flock of geese a few feet from the
runway. Airplanes do not disturb them. All we've been able to determine is
that often, after an ultralight takes off, they all make an attempt to take
off and follow it. After twenty-five years of aerial applications of less
than five feet above the surrounding terrain, all I've been able to observe is
that sea gulls are a hazard to aircraft. I've hit them, done a lot of damage
to them and the aircraft. Ducks and geese require a pretty determined aviator
to hit them and they like to settle down on the grass under the protection of
"the big bird" no matter if it is in the South Pacific or Wisconsin. If an
airplane gets too close to a duck or goose, it simply folds its wings and uses
gravity to accelerate at 32 feet per second straight down. There is not an
airplane made by man that can follow that path.
Dane County wishes to provide a green belt between Verona and Madison. At
present, Verona Airpark is the greenest area between Verona and Madison. The
turf runway provides an excellent filter strip. We use probably one hundred
times less chemicals to maintain that green than does a golf course. In fact,
in Japan, golf courses have been found to be the biggest contribution to
chemical pollution of ground water.
Verona Airpark provides recreation in the form of hot air balloons,
ultralights, and a portal to the world for those that would venture into it by
air!
I feel to properly zone this valuable asset to Verona and Dane County is
exactly what is required to maintain Dane County's objectives in AGRICULTURE,
BUSINESS, and RECREATION. All are provided by Verona Airpark and have been
for over thirty plus recorded years. The correct zoning is long overdue and
was due to oversight of powers that were at that time in error.
