APR 0 61990
April 6 , 1990
Agriculture, Environment and Land Records Committee
Room 116 , City County Building
210 Martin Luther King, Jr . Blvd.
Madison, WI 53709
Dear Committee Members,
I am the owner of the land involved in a proposed
Conditional Use Permit #806 for Mineral Extraction area in
conjunction with rezoning petition #4708 . I moved onto the
property in 1944 and have lived here since that time .
The mineral extraction area is located mostly in the
center of the mapped area, this area is between two up-
slopes, one on the northwesterly side and the other slope is
on the southeasterly side . I would estimate there is about
three acres where there is little (0 to 4 inches) of top
soil over the gravel . Hay was the best crop whenever I
tried to crop these knolls . When I seeded the land and
attempted to push the stone back into the ground with a
cultipacker, alfalfa would produce only a good first crop as
the gravel did not hold moisture well .
How far the gravel spreads out beyond the knolls has
not been determined. After the mineral has been extracted
and the area reclaimed, I have visions of better
agricultural land for crop production. I have asked the
lessors (Wolf Paving) to strip the area and stock pile the
cover in three different units : 1 - top soil , 2 - sub-soil ,
and 3 - soil that contains stoney material . I have also
asked that when reclamation begins the stoney material is
backfilled first followed by sub-soil and finally the top
soil . At the completion of reclamation the present knoll
would have been removed and the land would be an almost
level valley floor with a gentle slope.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
RogeJr A.
