Edited sign ordinance for Dane County. <br /> Only the applicable parts are listed. <br /> Last revision date is 1/31/2016. <br /> (2) The purpose of this subchapter is to regulate signs for all properties within the <br /> jurisdiction of this ordinance and to ensure the public safety, preservation of scenic <br /> beauty and the implementation of the desired overall character of the community and its <br /> constituent zoning districts. <br /> (47) Wall sign shall mean a sign mounted on and parallel to a building wall or other <br /> vertical building surface. 4 <br /> (40) Signable wall area shall mean the designated area of the wall of a building, up <br /> to the roof line, which is free of windows and doors or major architectural detail. <br /> Sign Size <br /> (23)Wall signs shall have,a maximum size of 100 square feet where the speed limit <br /> on the adjacent highway is 35 miles per hour or less, 200 square feet where the <br /> maximum permissible speed on the adjacent highway is between 36 and 45 miles <br /> per hour, inclusive, and 300 square feet where the speed limit on the adjacent <br /> highway is more than 45 miles per hour. Such a sign shall be erected to a height not <br /> to exceed 20 feet where the speed limit on the adjacent highway is 35 miles per <br /> hour or less, 35 feet where the speed limit on the adjacent highway is between 36 <br /> and 45 miles per hour, inclusive, and 50 feet where the speed limit on the adjacent <br /> highway is more than 45 miles per hour, except that for buildings six stories or more <br /> in height, a wall sign may also be located within 20 feet of the top of the building <br /> facade. There shall be no more than two such signs per building, except that a <br /> building on a zoning lot with two road frontages is allowed a maximum of three wall <br /> signs and except that a building on a zoning lot with more than two road frontages is <br /> allowed a maximum of four wall signs. The maximum size and height of signs on <br /> zoning lots with two or more road frontages shall be determined by reference to the <br /> nearest adjacent road which is not within the right-of-way of another road. <br /> Regardless that more than two wall signs are allowed on a building, in no event shall <br /> there be more than two wall signs on any one side of the building. Wall signs shall <br /> be located only on the building containing the business advertised on the sign. <br /> (6) The total sign copy area of all on premise signs related to a business shall not <br /> exceed the maximum permitted sign copy area Sign copy area shall be measured in <br /> the following manner:The copy area of signs which have a face, border or trim shall <br /> consist of the entire surface area of the sign on which copy could be placed. Copy area <br /> of a sign whose message is applied to a background which provides no face, border or <br /> trim shall be the area of the smallest rectangle which can encompass all words, letters, <br /> figures, emblems and other elements of the sign message. <br />
