Preliminary soil
tests indicate that clay soils meeting DNR specifications exist over approximately 18
acres of this parcel (see attached map) . Test pits dug on this parcel in June 1988 had
clay thickness of 5 and 8 feet.
Dane County proposes to remove the clay soils from this parcel during 1989. Approximately
75,000 cubic yards will be needed. Clay extraction will begin in the Spring of 1989.
Scrapers will be used to remove and stockpile the overlying topsoil. Depending on clay
thickness, it will either be excavated with scrapers, stockpiled, and then loaded into
trucks for transport to the landfill site (see attached map) ; or, it will be excavated
using a loader. Once the clay has been excavated, the borrow area will be regraded to
match original topography and drainage patterns. Sandy loam subsoil materials will be
backhauled from the landfill to replace the excavated material. The topsoil will then
be replaced and land restored for future agricultural use. It is proposed that the land
be kept in alfalfa and/or grasses for an initial 5-year period to allow soil structure
to become re-established. After this initial period, the reintroduction of a more intense
land use such as row-crop agriculture may be allowed based on soil test results and
committee approval.
Access to the site will be directly to USH 12-18 via an existing farm access point.
The trucks will then travel northwesterly on USH 12-18 for approximately three miles to
the landfill site (see attached map) . The majority of the adjacent land is also
agricultural with several single family homes nearby.
