4 STATEMENT TO GO WITH PETITION OPPOSING REZONING OF OREGON
SPORTSMEN'S CLUB PROPERTY IN THE TOWN OF DUNN
This is the first time neighbors have ever had an opportunity
to appear before the zoning Committee in regard to the shooting at
the Oregon Sportsmen's Club. Thanks to open government in the Town
of Dunn now, they were informed of this proposed change.
When the club was first established and a conditional use
permit granted, only abutting property owners were notified---
three or at most four, and one was the family that sold them the
land. When others found out and protested to the county zoning,...gffice,
it was too late. Likewise the town board where protests were also
lodged. So, despite the fact that some 30 families in the
neighborhood would be seriously affected by the noise, none who
were opposed had an opportunity to appear and the shooting started.
The neighbors object to this proposed change primarily because of
the noise.
The noise is not just a shot now and then, nor even one tti(ry
every few seconds, but rather a constant sort of rolling barrage
audible more than a mile away. It is a terrible annoyance to the 30 or
so families that live close by and denies them the pleasant, peaceful use
of their yards, especially on Sunday afternoons when the shooting seems
most boisterous and persistent. It also annoys many who live quite a far
piece away.
The Sportsmen's Club shooting is quite a contrast with the
Retriever Club which also has property on Hook Lake which it uses
for dog training and field trials. Here the shooting is quite tolerable
and occurs only intermittently---no more than three shots in a row
and then a long silence before any others are fired---even at the
height of their field trial season.
