• ,
(statement to go with petition 2.
.4 on rezoning Oregon Sportsmen's Club
property in the Town of Dunn.)
Noise can have serious health effects on people. Studies have
shown it can cause constriction of blood vessels and eventual heart
disease as well as anxiety neurosis. A 12 guage shotgun blast emits
138 decibels....nearly 50 above what is considered on the high
side of healthy (90). One close neighbor said he is worded about his
sanity. Another said he moved into the country to get a little peace
and quiet "and look what happened."
While the proposed construction of an indoor archery range
ostensibly has little to do with shooting and noise and would seem to
be a better kind of neighbor, this is not the case. Purpose of the
archery is apparently to increase membership which will mean more people
around more often to shoot. The building will also cost some money and
will require more events and generally increased activity, which
inevitably translates into more trap and skeet shoots.
Some other important considerations:
Noise decreases property values. Many neighbors have already
indicated they plan to ask the town to review their assessments
and revise them downward if this change goes through.
Many neighbors are also worried that if this change goes through,
the shooting will have the blessing of conforming zoning and thus
become a permanent earsore and annoyance.
Government has pretty well established recently that people
cannot engage in recreational pursuits that harm their neighbors.
The new state rules on smoking are a case in point and noise is similar,
if not worse.
At one time the Oregon Sportsmen's Club agreed to shoot only on
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. This agreement has been consistently
violated, especially as hunting season approaches in fall. Then
t ere has often been shooting on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
