topography is dominated by two high areas located in the northwest
and southeast corners of the site which both slope toward a north-
south trending drainage way. The drainage way enters the site at
the northeast corner and exits at the southwest corner. There is
approximately 25 feet of relief on-site. Surface elevations range
from 32 to 57 feet, City of Madison Datum.
The land surface would be altered by the borrow activity, but actual
topographic changes would be small (approximately 2-8 feet) where the
clay is removed.
Soils
Soils on the Droster-Homburg site consist primarily of silt loam soils
on 0-2% slopes, with an area of slightly steeper silt loam soils
(2-6% slopes) near the northwest and southeast corners.
Unconsolidated glacial deposits at the site consist of 2 to 8 feet of
silty clay loess underlain by silty sand glacial till.
The materials suitable for constructing a sanitary landfill clay liner
are found in the silty clay loess deposits. Dane County proposes to
remove all suitable liner material to a depth of approximately six
inches above the silty sand glacial till. A minimum of six inches of
silty clay loess above the silty sand glacial till will be left in
place to aid in holding soil moisture and to promote plant growth
for more rapid restoration.
Topographic Map
A topographic survey of the proposed borrow source has been performed
and a map (P/a., 5\. # 1 ) prepared to show physical features and
characteristics; including relief, surface water drainage and
surrounding land uses.
II. OPERATIONS (To Be Performed by Dane County)
Topsoil Stripping and Stockpiling
All available topsoil will be stripped from the borrow area to a depth
sufficient enough to expose any and all suitable clay material, taking
all practicable care to avoid incorporation of any of the underlying
sterile soil.
Any natural loam, sandy loam, silt loam, silty clay loam or clay loam
humus,-bearing soils will be considered topsoil and, therefore, will
1J
be salvaged.
The topsoil thus stripped from the borrow area will be either stockpiled
on-sjte so that it can be sold or reclaimed, or it will be placed
directly on the borrowed areas provided that they have been prepared
to receive the same.
Excavating and Transporting Clay Material
Soils suitable for clay-liner construction which exist at the Homburg-
Droster site will be excavated and transported to the site of the
proposed Dane County Sanitary Landfill No. 2.
