All areas where corn sileage is stockpiled must be covered with
an impervious surface such as asphalt , concrete or compacted
clay. The edges must be raised to catch the leachate, and the
surface sloped to the collection system.
2. The leachate must be collected and temporarily stored in an
impervious retention pond or tank. The system must be constructed
in accordance with the recommendations of the USDA Soil Conservation
Service and/or the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources .
3 . The owner must remove the leachate from the retention pond frequently
enough to prevent it from becoming anaerobic ( septic ) . The leachate
must be spread and preferably knifed-in on agricultural land . The
rate of the application shall be based on the nitrogen uptake of
the crop to be grown per the analyses and recommendations of the
Department of Natural Resources , Soil Conservation Service and/or
UW - Extension.
4 . The leachate presently ponded in the low area east of the sileage
storage site shall be removed as completely as possible and knifed-
in as per item 3 above .
