DANE COUNTY ZONING ORDINANCE
<br /> BEIN(; CHAPTER 10 OF THE ORDINANCES OF DANE COUNTY
<br /> An ordinance, to be known as Chapter 10, Dane County Zoning Ordinance as adopted by the Dane
<br /> County Board of Supervisors on July 20, 1938 as amended and including a comprehensive revision
<br /> adopted by the Dane County Board of Supervisors on May 18, 1950 as amended: for purpose of pro-
<br /> moting the public health, safety and general welfare by regulating, restricting and determining
<br /> the location of trades and industries, the location, height, bulk, number of stories, and size
<br /> of buildings and other structures, the percentage of lot which may be occupied, the size of
<br /> yards and other open spaces, the density of population, the location of buildings designed for
<br /> specific uses the areas along natural water courses, streams and creeks in which trades and
<br /> industries and the location of buildings for specific uses may be prohibited; establishing set-
<br /> back lines; and establishing districts of such number, shape and area deemed best suited to
<br /> carry out the purposes of this ordinance as it applies to lands outside the limits of incor-
<br /> porated cities and villages in Dane County; and providing penalties, pursuant to the authoriza-
<br /> tion of Sections 59.97, 59.971, 59.99 and 87.30 of the Wisconsin Statutes. The Dane County
<br /> Board of Supervisors do ordain as follows:
<br /> 10.01 DEFINITIONS: For the purposes of this ordinance certain terms used herein are defined
<br /> as follows:
<br /> (1) Accessory Building: A subordinate or supplemental building, the use of which is in-
<br /> cidental to that of the main building on the same lot or the use of the premises on which
<br /> it is located.
<br /> (2) Accessory Use: A use customarily incidental and accessory to the principal use of a lot
<br /> or parcel, or building or structure on the same lot or parcel as the principal use.

<br /> (3) Apartment House: A building containing accomodations for more than two families living
<br /> independently of each other.
<br /> (4) Apartment House Complex: A group of apartment houses, located on a single parcel of
<br /> land with certain facilities, such as driveways, parking spaces and the like, common
<br /> to the buildings in the complex.
<br /> (5) Boarding House: A building or premises where meals are served by prearrangement for de-
<br /> finite periods of time for compensation for five (5) or more person, but not exceeding
<br /> twenty (20) persons, not open to transients, in contradiction to hotels and restaurants
<br /> open to transients.
<br /> (6) Building: Any structure having a roof supported by posts, columns or walls used or in-
<br /> tended to be used for the shelter or enclosure of person, animals, equipment, machinery
<br /> or materials. Also included for permit and locational purposes are towers for micro-
<br /> wave antennas, community television antennas but not towers and posts for lines carrying
<br /> telephone messages or electricity.
<br /> (7) Building Height: The vertical distance, measured from the mean elevation of the finished
<br /> grade along the front of the building to the highest point on the roof for flat roofs;
<br /> to the mean height level between the eaves and the ridge for gable and hip roofs; to the
<br /> deck line for mansard roofs.
<br /> (8) Building Site Area: The ground area of a building or buildings, together with all open
<br /> spaces required by this ordinance.
<br /> (9) Campground: A parcel or tract of land, maintained, intended or used for the purpose of
<br /> supplying temporary or overnight living accomodations to the public by providing de-
<br /> signated areas for the placement of trailers tents, buses, automobiles or sleeping bags,
<br /> and may include buildings to provide services to the patrons such as restrooms, bathing,
<br /> laundry and commissary facilities. A primitive campground shall be any area or site
<br /> designated for camping purposeswhich is accessible only by hiking, boating or canoeing.
<br /> (10) Child Care Institutions: An institution for the care of children as provided for in
<br /> Chapter 48.60 of theWisconsinStatutes and is licensed by the State of Wisconsin.
<br /> (11) Clinic: An office or building in which dental, veterinary, medical or paramedical ser-
<br /> vices are provided on a out-patient basis. Such services as laboratory, X-ray and first
<br /> aid services may be provided.
<br /> (12) Club: An association for some common purpose, but not including a group organized for
<br /> or which is actually engaged in renderina a service which is customarily carried on
<br /> as a business.
