"I was expecting to get a phone number to someone who may or may not be helpful. Instead, I got lots of
great advice and links to even more advice. I am so glad I called."
- Aspiring Business Owner, Monona
"I was frustrated before I called, but the counselor quickly turned this into excitement about the services
provided by SBDC. Every company should wish to have someone this knowledgeable and upbeat. Thank
you for the experience."
- Business Development Manager, Waunakee
Small and New Business Development Equals Increased Jobs
Small businesses really are vital to our economy and tax base. According to U.S. Small Business
Administration research and the U.S. Census:
1. Quarter by quarter, small businesses with fewer than 500 workers outperformed large funis in net
job creation about three out of four times from 1992 through 2010, when private -sector
employment rose.
2. Small businesses with less than 100 employees make up 97% of firms with employees in Dane
County which equal over 13,000 companies.
3. New small businesses are the single -largest determinant of (GSP) gross state product, (SPI) state
personal income and total state employment.
4. Small business provide 50.4% of private sector jobs and generate more than half of U.S. private
non-farm gross domestic product (GDP).
5. Small firms help lead economic recovery from recession with entrepreneurs bringing new products
and services into the economy.
6. Wisconsin small firms created all of the net new jobs (new jobs less job losses) in 2004-2005.
The SBDC Business AccessLine and other SBDC services are helping Dane County residents start and
grow their businesses. I look forward to continuing to work together, long-term, to help Dane County's
small business economy continue to grow and provide good quality jobs for our citizens.
Thank you very much for your past and continuing support. If you need any additional information
please contact me at 263-0221 or nslemer@wisc.edu.
Sincerely,
Neil Lerner, Director
31 Page
