Small and New Business Development Equals Increased Jobs
Small businesses really are vital to our economy and tax base. According to U.S. Small Business
Administration research and the U.S. Census:
1. Small businesses provide over 53% of all employment in Wisconsin and all of the net new jobs (new
jobs minus job losses).
2. Small businesses with less than 100 employees make up 97% of firms with employees in Dane County
which equal over 13,000 companies.
3. New small businesses are the single-largest determinant of (GSP) gross state product, (SP1) state
personal income and total state employment.
4. Small business provide 50.4% of private sector jobs and generate more than half of U.S. private non -
farm gross domestic product (GDP).
5. Small firms help lead economic recovery from recession with entrepreneurs bringing new products and
services into the economy.
6. Wisconsin small firms created all of the net new jobs (new jobs less job losses) in 2004-2005.
The SBDC Business AnswerLine and other SBDC services are helping a growing number of Dane County
residents start and grow their businesses. I hope that we can continue to work together, long-term, to help
Dane County's small business economy continue to grow and provide good quality jobs for our citizens.
Thank you very much for your past and continuing support. If you need any additional information, please
contact me at 263-0221 or nslemer@wisc.edu.
Sincerely,
4Neilmer',Director
cc: County Executive Kathleen Falk
cc: Topf Wells, Chief of Staff
3 Page
