•
Joe Sokal - November 10, 1989 2 .
The present revised space needs of the Bureau of Research are:
Office 4,900 ASF
Lab 6 Support 1,950 ASF
Library 1,400 ASF
!list Support (copy room,
map room, reception,
clerical, conference 1.450 ASF
Total Space Required 9,700 ASF @ 75% EFF — 13,000 GSF
Existing Wakanda Building 7,239 ASF @ 75% EFF — 9,600 GSF
The revised space request is the result of numerous DNR meetings that
considered space saving measures such as compact shelving, reduction in office
space and shared laboratory facilities. It also reflects an increase of 8
staff since the original space request was compiled. The requested space does
n reflect a future need of an additional 1,350 ASF that will be necessary by
1995. The Department feels that accepting a design solution that does not
meet the present needs of the bureau let alone considering future needs is
basically a waste of time and scarce financial resources. DNR prefers to do
this project correctly at the Wakanda site or seek an alternative solution.
The Department of Natural Resources is committed to quality construction.
This commitment includes not only basic design, structural and mechanical
elements but also a quality productive environment for its employees. It is
unclear at this point how this commitment can be honored when it is suggested
that 9,700 ASF of documented space needs be accommodated in 7,200 ASF of
existing space at Wakanda. The situation has been thoroughly studied by a
consultant. The consultant recommends that an addition is necessary; DNR
concurs.
DNR is now requesting that DOA reconsider its earlier decision that an
addition is not necessary and allow the architect to prepare a design report
that reflects the true space need in this facility. The Department feels very
strongly about this issue and is willing to seek additional funding to support
an increased scope of work.
We would continue to work very closely with DOA on issues of esthetics and
handicapped accommodations. We would appreciate any help that you can provide
to expedite this problem.
D`!:ds
v:\8911\pm9wakan.dcm
cc: &SbV IIgc410+04a4-A'/y ItEN T KA-EP/Ne.E+e - ACS/47,
RE.4E.c.
