PROGRAM <br /> A.T.L.A.S1 21s a,aoatd of Education approved, separate, segregated Special Education <br /> program for students with severe emotional disabilities. <br /> Since the number of teens with severe behavioral issues in this community is growing. <br /> another educational alternative was established to address the specific behavioral needs of each <br /> student, without disrupting the education of other students in the iegulai education environment_ <br /> This program was needed not just to remove disruptive students from the regular education <br /> environment, but so that these students can become successful in school and can be served in a least <br /> restrictive environment as near as possible to the normal school setting in their home district. It is <br /> only in a small, safe, secure environment, which addresses each student's behavior in an individual <br /> manner, that these students will be successful.. <br /> However, this program is different from other alternative programs in many ways- First, <br /> only young adolescents (ages 12-16) are admitted into the program. The needs of this age group are <br /> different from the needs of older adolescents. To be successful at making changes in each student's <br /> behavior, the two age groups should not be mixed together. Also, this program is meant to be a <br /> transition, not a long-term or final placement for any student. As a result,the teacher was released from her employment contract and the operation <br /> of the program was suspended pending approval to use the building designated for the program. <br />
