IP
Dear County Commissioners, 6-11-96
I urge you to deny the petition for rezoning from Al to RH2 in petition 6606 from the
Town of Vermont. It is my understanding that this petition has been denied by the Town
Land Use Committee and that numerous neighbors are opposed to the zoning change.
This proposed zoning change will lead to further fragmentation of high quality agricultural
lands and increase sprawl.
A potential agricultural market stills exists for this land. Adjacent to the parcel in question
is a small farm owned by Dave and Barb Perkins. The Perkins have inquired into the
availability of the land because of their interest in expanding the acreage of their
community supported agriculture farm. Rezoning the parcel to housing would restrict
potential expansion in the most obvious direction which is due north from their existing
farm.
I have an interest in this situation because I am establishing an apple orchard at the farm.
If the farm flourishes the small number of tillable acres (about seven acres) may limit the
farm's capacity to meet the potential market. Preserving tillable acreage will help local
farmers maintain the viability of their operations and preserve the character of the Town
of Vermont.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
Sincerrely,,
Ed Je P sen
445 N.
