County of Dane
o o I'Sp018,1bLaiQ k1qi10AAUD.UM
DATE:
April 4, 1990
TO: Members of the Dane County Board
FROM:
Shary Bisgard, Chair
LR & R Committee
SUBJECT:
Petition #4702.
Since I am out of town today and unable to explain my position on this petition in
person, I am writing you this memo.
On your desk is a copy of our Committee's policy on residential development near mineral
extraction sites. This petition is in direct conflict with that policy - it is far too
close to a quarry site that the owner has expressed strong interest in re-opening in the
near future. We know from bitter experience that it is very unwise to allow residential
homes that close to what may become an active quarry.
The applicant proceeded to improve his site without gaining the County's approval of his
rezoning request and now argues that he did not understand our approval was required
before he proceeded with improvements to his property. By a 4-3 vote, we believe
aprpoval of this site would set a very bad precedent.
I urge the County Board to reject the rezoning petition. The applicant owns a total of
47 acres and can relocate elsewhere on his own property at a satisfactory distance from
the quarry thus alleviating any conflict.
Enclosure:
I
