Subsurface Exploration and Foundation Evaluation
Proposed Golden Oil Refueling Station
• Stoughton, Wisconsin
PSI Project No. 0092822
Page 2
southwest and south of the site, there are two towing businesses. The topography of the site is
hilly with an elevation difference of approximately 11 feet, sloping down away from the existing
buildings. There are areas classified as wetlands on the east side of the site. The existing
buildings, pavement, underground tanks, and other associated items will be removed prior to
construction.
Project Description
From the information provided by the architect, it is understood that the proposed project will
consist of a one-story structure, without a basement, about 10,500 square feet in plan
dimension. Structural loads were not provided, but are estimated to be light to moderate in
magnitude. No additional design information regarding the structure was provided.
A planned finished floor elevation of EL. 875.0 was shown on the preliminary site plan
provided by Keller Construction. The existing grades across the property presently range
between about EL. 872.1 and 876.0. Therefore, on the basis of the planned first floor
elevation, cuts and fills of about 1 to 3 feet are estimated to be necessary to reach finished
grade. However, this will also be dependent on the subgrade preparation criteria, to be
discussed in a later section.
The pavements for this project are expected to consist of parking lots and drive lanes for
passenger vehicles and semi-trucks. It is estimated that the proposed pavement areas will be
subjected to relatively moderate to heavy automobile traffic volumes, however traffic loading
was not provided.
It is understood that an underground stormwater management basin will be located just north
of the proposed structure under the asphalt parking lot. The size, type, bottom elevation and
other design details were not provided. Underground storage tanks will also be installed but
locations and other design details were not provided.
EXPLORATION AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES
Scope Summary
The field and laboratory data utilized in the evaluation and analysis of the subsurface materials
was obtained by drilling exploratory test borings, securing soil samples by the split-spoon
sampling method, and subjecting the samples to laboratory testing.
With respect to the stormwater management area, the field and laboratory work for
classification of the subgrade soils was performed to provide information for use by the basin
design personnel when considering requirements of Chapter NR151 of the Wisconsin
Administrative Code, and of WDNR Technical Standard 1002, "Site Evaluation for Stormwater
Infiltration" guidelines. The design of the proposed stormwater management area was beyond
the scope of services for this project.
