Section 10.01 Definitions <br />(33) Sign: Anything erected, hung, suspended, painted or attached to any other <br />structure, arrying words, letters, figures, phrases, sentences, names, designs, trade <br />names or trade marks or any :,ther device placed so as to be visible from a street or <br />highway and calling.attention to a business, trade, profession, commodity, product, <br />person, firm or corporation. For purposes of this ordinance a highway marker, symbol, <br />railroad crossing marker or signal, intended for the safety of the traveling public, <br />or any device.or symbol placed in the.highway right of way by or with the approval of <br />the governing body of such highway,.shall not be considered a sign. <br />(34) Sign, Directory :.A sign intended for the convenience of the traveling public, <br />calling attention-to .a service station, garage, eating or drinking place, tourist <br />camp, roadside stand, shop or similar business, catering to the traveling public. <br />Such sign shall not exceed twelve (12) square.feet in gross area, be located not more <br />than one -half mile in the approaching direction from the business advertised, and no <br />products may be- advertised which are -not for sale at the point indicated. <br />(35) Slaughter House: Any building or premises used commerciall for the killing <br />or dressing of cattle, sheep, swine, goats or horses, for human consumption and the <br />storage, freezing and curing of meat and the preparation of meat products. <br />(36) Story: The vertical distance of a building included between the surface of any <br />floor and the floor next above it, or if there be.no floor above it, then the space <br />between such floor. and the ceiling; provided that a basement shall.not be considered <br />a story. <br />(37) Story, Half: A story under a gable, hip or mansard roof, the wall plates of <br />which on-:at least two opposite. exterior walls are not more than two feet above the <br />floor of such story. <br />(38) Street: A public or private thoroughfare which affords primary means of <br />access to abutting property is .a street to that property for the purposes of this or- <br />dinance, except driveways to buildings. A driveway to a farm building shall not be <br />considered a street for the purpose of determining setback, even though such driveway <br />may have been designated a town road for the purpose of maintenance. <br />(39) Street Line: The dividing line between the street and the lot. <br />(40) Structure: Anything erected or constructed, the use of which requires more or <br />less permanent location on the ground. A sign, billboard or other advertising medium <br />detached or' projecting, and having a gross area of sixty (60) square feet or more, <br />shall be considered a structure for the purposes of this ordinance. Telephone, tele- <br />graph and power poles and lines shall not be considered structures fqr the purposes <br />of this ordinance. <br />(41) Structural.Alterations: Any change in the supporting members of a building, <br />such as the bearing walls or partitions, columns, beams or girders, excepting such <br />alterations as may be necessary for the safety of the-building. <br />(42) Tavern: A building or part of a building, open to the public, where fermented <br />malt beverages and /or'intoxicating liquors are-sold at retail for.consumption on the <br />premises :. The following shall not be considered a tavern: a restaurant where such <br />beverages are sold only at tables and only in conjunction with meals; a club, not open <br />to the public, where such beverages are sold in. conjunction with the operation of the <br />club; premises where malt bevs.,ages are sold by established organizations in conjun- <br />ction with the operation of a picnic, fair or other amusement enterprise. <br />(43) Tourist Camp: An area or premises on which are located permanent buildings, <br />either single cabins or buildings comprising two or more units under one roof, to- <br />gether with accessory buildings, for the temporary accomodation of tourists, but not <br />for permanent occupancy except by the owner or occupant of the premises or his em- <br />ployees. <br />-4- <br />
